What do you define as a sport? It takes extreme physical exertion and great skill.

There are many things people call a sport that I disagree with (like hanggliding) but gymnastics takes so much skill and years of dedication to master, and such range of skill between a person has done it one year and twelve years.

There is no one who doubts gymnastics is a skill--all you have to do is look at the woman who do it in the Olympics! Their muscles are huge!

Of course it's recognized as a sport! It's a Olympic sport, and one of the most difficult sport to master to boot. It may not be too popular in America - because in America we scarcely win medals most is taken by the Romanians - but it is very much so in other countries.
