I have been menstruating heavily for 21 days now, with heavy cramping. My doctor is leaving for vacation tomorrow and I am wondering how much longer I should wait before going for an emergency d&c (which is what he's recommending) and I'm wondering if I can wait till he comes back from vacation.

A D&C should have already been performed and no you should not wait! Seek medical attention as it takes 6 to 8 weeks to replace a pint of blood. I almost bled to death after my second child and had to have my 2nd D&C. The D&C will remove the lining and the other tissues making you still continue to bleed. Please, stop now and contact someone!

Blood is not produced in volumes on a daily basis, The mechanism is via the spleen and liver to rid the body of old or damaged cells. Red blood cells are constantly being replaced within the body via the Haversian Canal of the large bones.
However in cases of hemmorhage the body may be working overtime to replace the loss, eventually it cannot replace sufficient amounts as the loss may be greater than the production. This results in anaemia.

The signs of anaemia: paleness to the conjunctival aeas of the eyes, blanching of the areas beneath the fingernails and the lips being very pale in appearance. There may also be signs of dehydration ( loss of skin elasticity when the skin is pinched on the back of thr hand it takes an inordinate time to return to its notmal state. Other factors also present in serious blood loss, sweating irrational behaviour etc. The long term effects are also electrolyte imbalance .

Having said all of this I will point out that this is where it progresses if left untreated. I suggest you get to a hospital or another OB and get an examination ( independent opinion) and be better informed on where your condition is actually positioned at this point in time.
