There was an old song called, "Is That All There Is?" I think, for a lot of people, it is a desire for more, better, faster, thinner, richer and the list could go on forever. We know what we have and usually imagine what we don't have to be so much better. If we get that 'better' thing we wanted, it loses its appeal and we start wishing for something else. So, the answer to why we do this is that we rush forward on a treadmill without stopping to completely acknowledge and appreciate what we already have.

Because we don't appreciate what we have until it's gone.
For many it is a motivation for living, but this sounds pitiful when the thing in question is an unnecessary material item. Peer pressure, image & status must have a lot to do with it of course. There's also the desire to experience more interesting things in life and less of the mundaine chores, eg having a computer to go surfing :-) or a washing machine to do the washing for you.

Humans are acquisitive by nature. It is hard-wired into their brains. It is one of the things that helped us survive and then thrive. More, more, more was a useful strategy at one time. But now, for most of us lucky ones, like the ones that live in North America, it's just a leftover trait that has allowed consumerism to became the dominant principal of our society. Sad, but that's just the way it is. Hard to fight human nature.

We are constantly being told we need it to be happy.
We are child like and see what others have and want it too.
We believe it will make life better.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!

It is the American way. Live way past your means and rack up your CC's to the max. No I really do not know why, greed is all I can attribute this to. I gotta go car shopping now, see ya.
