Advanced Micro Devices have been in business for 30 years. I have used two of their processors and they worked well. They seemed to work faster than a comparative Intel processor. There has been heat tests run on them where they didn't hold up as well as the Intel processors, but I never had any problem with them.

AMD is the leading compeditor of Intel. It is a fairly new company, but almost every brand of computer is now coming out with AMD processors. They are both fairly equal in power and technology.
