It means to find the meaning of the story. Is it about
unrequited love, struggling against poverty, lessons
learned through experiences, the consequences of
a fullfilled or wasted life or an overview of different
people met on a journey...their life story. Everyone
will see different themes throughout the novel and it
is up to you to pick out the most prevelent one.

You read the Novel and then write the theme of the Novel.

When you don't know, there are always resources to find the answers.
