For myself, If I use lol in a question, I am usually being less serious, or sometimes sarcastic about the question.
If I use lol in a statement, I'm usually making a joke, or just not being serious at all.

If your name is Lawrence you could be called lol...or it could be hello shortened for convenience...or it could be two sticks waiting for the ring to levitate...all I know is that the English language is being eroded daily by mobile users. Try and remember what you did with your hands before the Mobile came on the scene. There is a word Loll, look that one up and it might give you a clue.

Dunno if this is any help but in insant message alot of people just put lol when they dont know what what ot say. ^^
Here is an example
me: Jade Goody should die a slow and painful death
friend: lol
I've never heard of anyone that used lol and were actualy laughing out loud..
