why do you folks just say the fella I dated , or the gal I was involved with instead of "my ex"-- You were not ever married to these people. I realize I am older than dirt but why refer tosomeone as the ex if you were not married to them?

It seems people today think that when you date someone you are going steady or engaged. The concept of dating has been lost. If you take a girl out on a date she think shes supposed to be the only one you date and she owns you. When I was younger people dated different people. One night you took one girl out and maybe a few nights later a different girl. There was no "I Own you" attitude going on.

You must be older than dirt ... your EX is just that an Ex-partner that you use to date, sleep with, marry ... whatever ... try not to read between the lines too much ... come on now would you really want people to say :

This guy I use to date but he wasn't ready for marriage ... or this one crazy chick that didn't know how to write a check ... blah blah blah ... we don't need the whole story - all we need is one simple letter to group them all together - X .... !

They are not saying ex-spouse (husband or wife)... they are saying ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend. I do not think there is any specific defintion or rules regarding the use of "ex-" other than it being in the past. What is wrong with this? I suppose people could go around saying past or historical boyfriend/girlfriend, although saying ex is much shorter and simply gets the point across.

If you were in any kind of serious relationship, it just seems to be common practice to call them your ex. A lot of work goes in a relationship, and if you were exclusive with someone for a long period of time, I think it calls for a moniker a little stronger than "we dated". Dating can be taken in so many different ways it diminishes the importance of the relationship if it was serious. Me personally, I usually say "ex" or "involved with" if the relationship had any merit. It's just the norm.

As in ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend? Doh! Usually, the connotation is that it was a serious committed relationship.

Nobody calls somebody they went on few dates with anything other than "this woman" or "this man" as in "I dated this woman...." or "I dated this man....". Mostly, people forget those people and never feel the need to speak of them.

It's the ones that involved serious heartbreak that get the distinguished moniker of "ex". As in Evil-X (still harboring resentment), "My ex used to..." (boy, glad that's over), or "That was my ex..." (last serious relationship before the one you might or might not be in now).

I agree with you. Its like someone thats 'dating' telling you what you should do if your spouse cheats. I know it hurts either way, but there IS a difference if you date someone and they cheat on you and if your married for years and they cheat. THERE is a difference is a former girlfriend/boyfriend and ex husband/wife.

If I ever say "ex"... I always say boyfriend in front of it. "My ex boyfriend". It bugs me when someone says just "ex" for a past boy/girlfriend.

Suppose the ex is short for ex-boyfriend / ex -girlfriend.

"ex" is used like a prefix which refers to former, I don't believe it means husband or wife, girlfriend or boyfriend. My principal was ex-marine, I know for a fact he wasn't my former wife or husband
