If a woman doesn't eat very healthy, for example she eats alot of junk food and fast food and I don't think she takes any vitamins, but she did cut out all caffeine, is breastmilk still better than formula or should she be giving her baby formula? And is it my place to say anything about it, I don't really know her all that well.

I know everyone says breast milk is best, but my children were all formula-fed and they are healthy and intelligent. So, formula is not the evil everyone makes it out to be. That being said, if this person chooses to breast or bottle feed is not the only problem. She needs to change her eating habits before her child starts to eat table food, or the child will suffer that way as well. You don't have to be intrusive when you talk to her about her eating habits, maybe you can invite her to go w/ you to a nutritionist. Or casually give her some pamphlets, or even suggest to her to visit a WIC clinic, they have nutritionists there.

I'd say that breastmilk would still be better than formula. It's proven that children that are breastfed create immunities when it come to allergies and different types of illness. As far as how she eats the problem that make create is that she may not even be able to produce and if she does it make not last. You need to eat healthy to keep you well balanced or your body will stop producing milk. One thing she can also do it breastfeed and give the baby formula. That way the baby is still getting the good things in breastmilk and the formula will make sure that if the mother is lacking anything, the baby will still be fed what it needs.

Breastmilk is always better, the tests they do that say that formula is the same as breastmilk are done in Africa where people are starving. But a healthy diet wont hurt either the baby or the mother.

Breastmilk is still better than formula.

Even a severely malnourished mother can breastfeed.

Obviously it would be best if mom had a better diet. MOM is the one who is going to be short-changed if her diet is totally junk, not baby. The sad part is that AFTER the baby is weaned, what is she going to feed the kid? She needs to work on her healthy eating habits now so that she can pass them down to her kid. Breastfeeding is the start of healthy eating for the baby.

Breatmilk is not the best choice for every mother.

But it IS the best choice for EVERY baby.

If mom is not eating right, her baby will stil get what it needs, mom will suffer though. The amount of fat and junk that she comsumes will not harm teh baby.

As an almost exclusively breastfeeding mom to an 8 month old. I can tell you, some days thats all I want is the high calorie junk food. It is extremely hard to consume that many extra calories.

As long as she is getting from all the food groups, she will be fine even if its junk food.

Breastmilk is always better...unless there are drugs involved. Breastfeeding is a personal issue and if you dont know w mom that well...i would keep out of it. If she is a breastfeeding junk food junkie....that baby is fine for now...when she is weaned she will be eating junk food along with her mother...now THAT will be worse!

I think breastmilk is still better. She must be getting some nutrition to live and the body will take what it needs for the milk and leave her with the leftovers.

Breastmilk is best in this case, as it is in most.

The woman's body will take from her bodily stores what it needs. Studies prove, even serverly malnourished mothers can produce milk for their babies that is better than formula.

I would go with the formula to be sure the baby is getting all it needs.
