There is no substitute for common courtesy, respect for others and ethical speech. That being said "political correctness" and its associated repressive behaviors are nothing more than a social gag order, that do more harm than good. It allows negativity to "quietly fester" without being challenged.

In current day speak if you disagree with a particular view, it is OK to be labeled, i.e. homophobes, anti-semite, racist, intolerant, etc. -- but you can't label.

It seems to be ok to voice an opinion as long as it is in the affirmative, and if not then you should just shut up.

Yes, people don't understand the difference between real bigotry and political correctness. If you suggest there may be a reason for the rampant poverty of blacks, for example, other than the "white man puts them down" then you are labeled a bigot and cast into the depths of public ridicule.

In other words, political correctness has hampered honest efforts to solve or even address social problems.

100%..Absolutely.
Why? Because we have to play nice no matter what. You answer a question on this silly playsite with the truth and if someone doesn't like it...Bang Yahoo Police come at you with a violation.
I'm sick of it...Now I'll play the game the same way....Forget about political correctness...

You will know when political correctness has gone too far when you are kneeling on a prayer rug with a gun to your head.

There's no such thing as Political Correctness. No one is going to stop you from saying what you want to say. However, you have on control how others might respond to what you say.

You are naive to think you can say whatever you want and expect people to "lighten up and deal with it". They have the right to react however they want to react!

If you develop a wide enough vocabulary, you don't need to worry about political correctness--you can slam people with words they don't even understand.
