1. the South had better generals than the North as was indicated by how many times Lincoln had to change his leading general of the armies
2. the North lacked specific direction as was indicated by Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation before the 1862 elections to keep the North enthused enough to continue. With the Emancipation Proclamation the direction chaned from preserving the Union only to ending slavery
3.The south could use guerilla war tactics because of a better cavalry than the North
4.the South was fighting for their specific way of life that of a plantar society while if the North had lost or drew there would have been 2 countries but their way of life would have continued because the South was interested in preserving their way of life and states rights over the central government's control

Southern landowners tended to leave their property to only 1 child, generally the oldest male. As a result, a second son was more likely to be sent to the military (before The War) than sons from a northern business family (who could give different parts of the business to different children, maybe even .. GASP females!). More military training before The War translated into better tactics for the Confederacy, which lacked supplies, railroads to transport them, and cannon factories (there were at least 2 cannon factories in the Confederacy, it is commonly said there were none, but one of them was in my hometown of Rome, GA).

If you look at Generals in both armies you will see that more of them were from the Deep South, even the ones who fought for the Union.

Also, consider the effects of invasion. It is harder to win a war when you are an invader with little to gain, as opposed to being invaded where you literally have everything to loose.
