Maybe when they are trying to escape from a sea lion.... but swimming is probabaly more effective... and tons faster.

I take it you've never watched penguins in the water; anyone who has knows that penguins DO fly - they fly underwater. Their wing motions do not mimic swimming, but are rather like the wing movements of their airborne cousins. If you ever have a chance to watch a group of penguins move through the water, at a zoo or aquarium for example, I highly recommend you take advantage of the opportunity. They are beautiful and fascinating creatures to watch.

They do..their own version of underwater flying.....when i watch them that's what it reminds me of. Very awsome!!
