here in Canada we observe loyalty to the party that addresses the issues that we deem are important. It doesnt matter what party is addressing it.However in the US,it seems many people vote for the party (Dems or repubs) because that is their party and they will always vote for that party and they always will.Regardless of what their policies are.Why is this?

I think the answer lies in a fundimental flaw in your question. Americans are no different than anyone else anywhere in the world. In the case of our voting record shows not that we care little for our leaders policies, but that our two main parties have narrowed their field of prospective voters down to a core science. The democrats cater to the minority vote, women's rights, and ecological issues whereas the Republican party walks hand in hand with religious fundamentalist beliefs, and conservitive ideals. In the beginning it was only Federal power vs. State power. After 200 years we are really seeing a survival of the fitest of politics.
My second thought is that I strongly disagree with the idea that Americans are much differrent than the rest of the world. Out of the 190+ countries in the world only a handfull have the same level of freedom we have in North America, and furthermore almost every country has a historical "bad spell" when it comes to how it's internal politics are handled. Just look at French Quebec.
The real question should be, how is it America stands so strong when it's people are so divided. Finding the answer to that only reveals what makes this country so great.

There is a big difference between what Dems believe is good for people and what Repubs believe, I'm a liberal so usually vote Democrat and I think the gov't should help people, the Repubs think that if people look to the Government for salvation then the govt can control them and they will not learn to take care of themselves. Booth views are true to a point, anyway there is a simplistic example but it is why we are split D vs. R

Actually, neither national party has a majority lock on voters. There's about 40% now that identify themselves as independent. A lot of party line voters do just what you say is the case for Canadians. They believe that their party (whichever one it is) is more likely to address the issues that are important to them than the other. Besides, it's a whole lot easier to mindlessly pull a single lever than to actually make the effort to research and decide on each office or issue they are voting for on any given ballot. I'd lay odds that's not infrequent in Canada either.

Not everyone votes that way. Some of us can and do vote according to the issues. People look at their own beliefs and take a side. People sometimes vote just to stay in their own party. Unfortunately, I think that can be a down fall sometimes.

I wish I had a good answer for that. I would say most people don't pay attention at all to politics in this country. They're to busy watching american idol or dancing with the stars. But the one's that do pay attention tend to lean a certain way on the issues.

As an American I am completely baffled by the same thing. And the propensity to not only label others with one name like Liberal, Conservative, etc., but to allow one's self to be recognized in the same manner.

You make a very good point. It indicates just how divided our country has become.

I don't know if I really have an answer for your question, but I just wanted to say that I am glad that you asked it. It is a very good question. I know that all Americans do not feel this way, but so many are set in their ways, they don't like to look at other points of views. I really am not sure why that is, but I really hope that it changes soon. :)

Americans aren't really different from each other. We all love pop culture and fast food. We hate other races. We all love football and SUVs. We think we have democracy and that everyone else should have it too. We think people who don't wear jeans and a t-shirt are weird and probably Muslim. And we'd all sell our souls if it meant that we'd be millionaires.

Not all Americans follow the 'party line.' Many of us support the person who we think is the best for the job, regardless of party affilitation. I am one of them.
