opportunity to "advance" in marketing, currently I am the receptionist. My question is... is it weird that I don't want to get involved even though it would offer much more pay?? I have no interest in marketing what so ever? I feel like slacker, because I don't volunteer to do projects, etc. ?????????

Sounds like either you like the current job you have and don't want to do anything else, or you're just marking time with your current employer and are waiting for the 'right' thing to come along somewhere else.

If you don't have any ambitions towards more pay, a better job, more responsibility, etc., then that's fine for you. Not everyone has the same drive or personal goals.

I'd guess that your employer sees you have the potential to do more than you're currently doing - you must have the intelligence or skills he/she is seeking. It's your choice to use your potential and grow, or stay where you are.

Not weird.

I worked for state gov for 31 years in Computer Technology. If the Governor's Office issued instructions that each agency needed to do "X" (whatever topic it is this year), I would get called in and told to do it. I wrote contracts, supervised network engineers (put together the computers), programming, disaster recovery planning, etc.-

They kinda had the attitude: Well, we are paying your salary, so we might as well get you to do something.

In your case, it could be a Receptionist makes X amount of money. A marketing person, could make "x + y" money. So instead of paying for an experienced marketing person, they want to get it done as cheap as possible in terms of wages.

I always took the view that I would do it. Doing anything beat sitting there, bored out of my mind. I also figured, sooner or later, I would find something I enjoyed.

Also, when business got tight and they were talking layoff (yep, even in state government people get laid off), I was one of the last names to come up on the list. Reason, is I could do at least part of everyone's else job. But the people who often got laid off, had stayed within a single area or skill set.

You are letting BIG WORDS get in your way. Your employer would not ask you to do the job if you were not doing it already. MARKETING is only the pointing of prospective customers to the sales people. If you are the type of person that would not tell a person that need a hat that they can get one at the door, then marketing is not for you. If you are kind and considerate of others and want what is best for others, then you would help them get their needs met. LEARNING what people need, and what people need your product will make you the best marketing marketer that there can be.

The question is; ARE OTHER PEOPLE IMPORTANT?

Your afraid. Now buck up and get after this marketing thing. You can do it...someone believes in you and they are trying to unchain you from your receptionistic oppression... Take the opportunity to challenge your ablility and once you meet even a tiny bit of success you will thank me. Your not a slacker, now get off your butt and get to marketing stuff. Or you could continue being uninterested and help me clean the french fry machines after work so I can get back to my trailer and watch wrestling.

That's okay.

Your employer will find someone else because it's just a matter of time before they will figure out that they cannot convert you into the capable person that they believe that you are.

Years will go by and you will discover how your choice has affected you, and by that time... it will be too late.

Why? Because you will discover through age and wisdom that opportunities like that don't land in your lap ever again.

Lightning strikes twice in the same spot, but once in a life time opportunities do not.

From experience, Marketing is difficult and VERY time consuming. If your heart isnt in it your effort wont be either and I am sure your boss would rather yoube in a position that benefits the company not one that you took because you felt bad for not taking the opportunity. Plus if you dont pass this up, the right position for you will end up passing you. Good Luck.

If I was you I would give it a shot. You never know you may like it. Maybe suggest to your boss that it's a temp situation that you aren't sure you are going to enjoy it. And at least if you try it then you can say for sure it isn't for you... good luck

Consider it an opportunity for advancement.

Most companies want to be advancing their employees, depending how young you are. If you are happy where you are, you should let you boss know, but if you like where you are then don't expect your compensation to move either.
