-also, a magnet that repels just as strong as it attracts.

Using a DC current gives the electromagnet poles - either will attract a ferromagnetic substance like iron or nickel and repel a magnet whose poles are the same at the closest point (north pole attracts a south pole, but repels another north pole).
You need - a strong DC power source; copper wire (coated to prevent short circuiting) and a ferromagnetic core (like a large steel nail) to wrap the copper wire around. Strength is related to: number of windings (the more, the stronger); the current strength; the thickness of the wire itself and the material of the core it is wrapped around (iron is best).
So... more coils; more current!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many windings of wire around an iron core with the wire ends attached to a DC source. Magnetic polarity is a natural property of same, although any ferrous non-magnet will be attracted by either pole. No uni-polar magnets have yet been found although many have looked for that in nature.

take some iron nails and winde it up with some copper wire.
now pass current through it and charge it ,as much magnetic power you need.
