I know we conquered Iwo Jima in WW2. I was wondering...did Iwo Jima belong to Japan before America invaded it? If not, who did it belong to, or was it a country in itself?

Yes, it was a Japanese possession, but not considered a home island like Saipan. The sad thing about the Iwo campaign was if the US had attacked even 6 months earlier, it would've been almost totally undefended.

Japanese occupied it when US tried to take it, it was important because it would give Fighters and bombers a place to land after attacking mainland Japan
