In most states you need a four year (Bachelor's) degree from an accredited college or university. Your degree does not necessarily have to be in Criminal Justice. I know PO's with degrees in Education, History, Business, Psychology, etc, etc, etc.

Four years and if you go for master degree it's about 1 1/2 years. You would major in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work to become a probation officer. Good Luck!

4 years.
But before you run down that path, you might want to try other possibilities. Most Police Department have a "ride-A-long" program where private citizens can ride with the cops while they are patrol. Try it. I did it for about 6 times.
