We've now had mice for many months, mainly in the kitchen but also in bedroom.

We have 2 pet bunnies that are free to roam through the house. My friend tried in her house an alarm that humans can't hear but mice can, which worked for her but I cannot use here because the rabbits would hear it.

I cannot get a cat, also because of the bunnies- my vet advised against it.

I do not want to use traps, I think they're terribly cruel. I've tried the box kind where you let them out, but they have been ignored.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I recently had mice in my house and used the catch and release traps like you had. The only thing that worked is peanut butter. I caught 10 mice in 2 days. Place peanut butter on a small peice of cut out cardboard and place in trap.

short of getting a rat snake or other constrictor for a pet - and then letting it have the run of your house, you will probably have use some form of trap.

If you have so many that you see them regularly, then you probably have a family of them that will continue to reproduce until you will be living with them instead of the other way around.

There is a new trap out that looks like a "chip clip" - you squeeze the two tabs together and it locks in the open position.

find an area where they are running back and forth and set one of the trap wher they are likely to run right up to it.

Put a small amount of peanut butter on the upper-inside of the trap.

This will work. I know it's a little gross for some people to use kill traps, but I'm afraid it's either that or you might as well start putting out food for the mice and adopting them as pets also.

Good Luck

Have you checked with a vet to make sure your rabbit would be irritated by the alarm you mentioned? Contrary to popular belief, rabbits are NOT members of the rodent family. So that might be an option after all. Definitely check with the vet or a well-known rabbit group first though.

Also... just an FYI... cats and rabbits can live in perfect harmony. I have 3 indoor cats (including one excellent mouser) and a free-roaming house bunny. I also have 3 indoor dogs, who also never bother the bunny. Of course I do put bunny in a large cage when I'm not home, just in case... but he's out all evening and none of the other animals bother him at all.

Anyway... only other things I can think of are live traps, which you mentioned. Try using peanut butter in them. Mice LOVE peanut butter and they can't just grab it and run off like they do with cheese.

They also sell a type of natural mouse repellent... it's made out of I think weasel dung? They sell it at the "healthy pet" store near me. It doesn't smell like pooh or anything... but it apparently makes the mice think a weasel (natural predator to mice) lives there, so they leave. I never did try it though, so not sure how effective it is... plus, like the alarm one... there's a chance it could spook your bunny too.

Wish I could be more help. Good luck.

Well, when I was really little, I had 5 cats and 2 dogs. The cats were Bear, Trixie, Kitchen Cat, Crazy, and Luigi. Bear was a Chartreux. Trixie, Kitchen Cat and Crazy were just domestic short hairs, and Luigi was a Maine Coon mix. The dogs were Adrienne and Rocky. Adrienne was a Norwegian Elkhound and Rocky was a 50/50 of German Shepherd and Newfoundland. Then we had 6 pets in my teenage years. George ,a Senegal parrot, Holly, an English Spot rabbit, Cookie, a chinchilla, Roxie, a 50/50 of Great Pyrenees and Newfoundland, Baby, our cat, a gray tabby, and Sammy, a Midwestern painted turtle. Now, I live with my best friend, and we have 2 dogs and 2 cats. The dogs are 2 German Shepherds, Ebony and Twi. Ebony is a solid black female and Twi is a silver sable male. The cats are both Maine coons, Midnight and Timcampy. Midnight is a solid black female and Timcampy is a gold/yellow tabby male. So, I have had a LOT of animals in my lifetime.

I've had great success with this live trap in my house:

http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266

It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):

I've caught over a dozen mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. I've had good luck using Cheerios as bait, along with the cracker that goes in the "cracker slot." Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:

http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp

The link above also contains a recipe for homemade mice repellent.

If you do live trap mice, you probably know to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home, in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. You might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them.

For those who don't know, the absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.

THANK YOU for wanting to be kind to mice. :) Good luck.

Try another kind of "no kill" mouse trap. There are several on the market, but the HavaHart trap is the best. Some hardware stores rent them out or you can purchase one for about $12.

Be sure to use bait that mice love to eat, like a peanut or piece of walnut or piece of bread with peanut butter. Be sure to check the traps often.

Another thought: Mice hate peppermint. Put a few drops of "oil of peppermint" on a piece of cotton. Place several around the house ( especially in the kitchen ) and places where you see they have been. (Mice travel along the edges of the wall.) They may move out on their own and you will never see them again!

Stuff all holes throughout your apt (especially the spaces between the floorboard and the wall and under your sinks) with steel wool. IIt keeps them out. It's the only thing that worked for me. The mice probably aren't living in your apt, but behind the walls, and they come into your home for warmth & food.

Also...mice will be attracted to any food you leave on the floor for the bunnies.
