Africa is also connected with Asia... There are only 5 big land masses in the world, Greenland, Antarctica, America, Eurasia+Africa and Australia. It's men that created the continents as we know them today. So the number of continents that exist will vary from country to country. In lots of countries America is considered a single continent (like my country). The International Olympic Comitee considers America to be just one continent. Actually South and "North" America are linked, the Panama canal can't be used as an excuse, it's a canal, seas and oceans separate continents, not canals.

There are seven and in case you didn't notice...Europe and Asia are connected too so your argument about North and South America is invalid.Since the construction of the Panama Canal, they really aren't connected by land anymore, either.
