Learn the difference between "virtual" and "physical". "Physical" is the memory that is really and truly present on the card even when the computer is turned off. "Virtual" is memory that is "faked" by the software. So, play pretend: two programs are running. One is using 256 bytes of memory, the other is using 256 bytes of memory. Real quick, while one program's busy and the other's not (faster than you can blink an eye!) the operating system writes the unbusy program's memory contents to disk and lets the busy program use the same *real* memory space for its own purposes... Thus you have 512 bytes of "virtual" memory

the virtual should always be higher than physical, about twice as much is a common user value. close all programs, refresh all drives (f5) then start/program/system tools / sys information.

check values for memory usages

run task manager and check performance, look for high mem usage, if found, you still have a lot running in memory. check the system tray in lower right close all running tasks by selecting (right click) and exit then check again

the system should be allowed to manage virtual memory,
right click my computer
select properties
click advanced tab
click performance settings button
click advanced tab again
check the boxes
settings should be
programs
programs
click on virtual memory:settings
select radio button for system managed file

apply selections

the only real other issue for most is enough disk space, be sure you have enough. less than say 500 meg may open your system to memory/disk space issues
