Because the media build the England team up to be the best in the world all because we won the World Cup in '66.
We have some good players but again, the media give a false impression that the 'average' fan actually thinks we'll win everything - in reality (well mine anyway) we are a distinctly average with a team full of individuals who don't play as a unit.
...don't get me wrong we get arrogant because of all the media hype and believe the spin.

It's not so much that we love to see the English football team loose, but more the attitude surrounding the whole build up to them playing.
They have some of the best players in the world, yet don't seem to gel well and ALWAYS find excuses for failing to impress at major tournaments. This is usually lumped onto one person, be it the coach/manager, captain or star player just not performing. What the Poms forget is football is a team sport and it's not one person, but the whole team that makes or breaks them on the field.
This attitude permeates so much of their existence that they are forever finding excuses instead of just dealing with the problem and getting on with life.
Besides football is much more interesting when an underdog wins occasionally.

People love to see England fail at everything mate, not just football, the Scots are the most bitter people towards the English, because they have none genune sporting achivements to brag about.
Let's face it, even the Scottish women are better at sports than the males, it saids it all when you get 4 bored housewives winning gold at the winter olympics for sending a hoover down a block of ice.
