It has been covered on albums and live in concert by over 30 various artists including Pearl Jam, John Mayer, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Cybill Shepherd, Lolly, Dandy Warhols, David Rawlings, and Cam'ron.

Which episode of the Hills is it and maybe I can help you with that. I am a Hank Hill fanatic.....lol....

The song was orginally written by Robert Hazzard for a male singer while he was a lamenting a breakup with a bad girlfriend. It was pitched to Cyndi Lauper on a whim and she loved it. I think the male artist most noted for it is the Dirt Brothers, a realtively new indie band. I don't know if that is what you heard, but it would make since. I think this version of the single was just released last year.

The song was written by Robert Hazard, who recorded his version of the song in 1979. Lauper changed the lyrics slightly to allow it to be performed by a female and Hazard approved the minor changes.
