I have around a 3.75 average GPA. Could I get accepted and is it a good school?

I am not sure which school you are talking about, but you don't need to be pre-med to go to med school. You just need to get the required classes. Most people at my university are pre-med, but it isn't an official major. Instead they are biology, chemistry, psychology, or philosophy majors who take the required courses.

And a 3.75 should get you in at most schools if you have good recommendations and test scores.

Good Luck!

Pre-med is not usually a specific major. Most people who want to go to medical school major in biology or chemistry. However, there is no set major that you need -- as long as you take all the classes required by medical schools.

Trust me on this -- you can take all of those classes at College Park. See the link below for their advice to premed students.

UM-College Park is one of the better state universities in the country. UMBC is not a bad school -- but isn't in the same league as U-MD. Medical schools will pay more attention to a student from a good school than from one that is not as good (despite what others here tell you).

There is no way you should choose UMBC over U-MD if you have a choice.

At most colleges, there's no such thing as a "pre-med" major. Pre-med is just what people call themselves if they ultimately want to go to med school.

College Park is a good school. They'll have bio, chem, and many other science majors. Just pick one you like to make it easier for you to get into all the required science courses (they fill up fast).

Med schools each have their own set of required courses to get in. You need to look up each med school you're interested in and see what they want (most have the same basic set of courses with very minor differences). They don't care what your major is as long as you have the grades and have taken all the courses they want.

with that GPA, i'm assuming you probably have good standardized test scores and extracurriculars.

if you do, then you could definitely get into UMBC. they accept about 70 some% of their applicants.

i know from experience that UMBC is a great school for people on the pre-med track. my brother, who is currently a sophomore at UMBC, is on that very track and is extremely satisfied with the school and the courses offered. there are also many opportunities for research at UMBC, which should not be overlooked.

remember: it doesn't matter what college or university you attend. what matters is what you make of college. if you get a cumulative 4.0 gpa, lots of community service, an excellent MCAT score, and great recommendations, then you can go to any med school you want. UMBC alumni have been accepted into prestigious med schools such as Harvard med school and Johns Hopkins.

Good luck!

In order to get into med school in the US, you need to go to the best university that you can get into. At a minimum, it really needs to be one that's ranked in the top 150 or so in the country - tier 1 or tier 2. So of the two you listed, your choice has to be College Park. It's not that it's impossible to get into med school from a tier 3 school. It's that it's harder. You stand a better shot if you go to College Park. But don't take my word for that. Speak to each university, and ask them what percentage of their applicants to US med schools actually get in. That's a telling statistic, and it will help you decide which school fits you best.

University of Maryland Baltimore County is a very good school, from what I understand. It is an Honors University and seeing your GPA, you seem like a good candidate for acceptance. It was on my list of Under-Grad Schools.
