I've always been a fan of the fresco "Bull Jumping," found in the palace of King Minos. I don't quite know why. I find it to be very compelling, particularly since it can be considered an "action" piece. It's as though the viewer can anticipate what the next movements of the bull and jumpers will be.

Anything by Van Gogh, especially Starry Night, also Charles Burchfield and James Ensor's work. For more contemporary works I love Elizabeth Murray, Lee Bontecou (sculptor), Philip Guston, Terry Winters, Matthew Ritchie and a ton of others.
Oh and I think the cave paintings in France are absolutely amazing and miraculous.

I can just get lost in "Starry Night" and "Creation" is so very beautiful.
