It sounds like your computer has cruft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruft#Computing )

This happens with computers as they grow older. What you want to do is

1) go to control panel, open 'add/remove programs'. Now look for software you don't use anymore and remove it from your computer.
2) download Crap Cleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com and run it (both the 'cleaner' and 'issues' tabs, you will see what I mean when you run it). This will clean out a lot of old files and crap
3) go to http://www.safer-networking.org and download Spybot Search and Destroy, install it, and run it. Follow the onscreen instructions and let it do its thing.
4) finally, go to the Start menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and click 'Disk Defragmenter'. Defragment your system disk (c:)

do this once every month or so and you will find your computer running much smoother. I write all this in the assumption you have some kind of antivirus installed, if not, that would be step 5) install and update and run antivirus.

It could be one of many problems.

1. Fragmentation
2. Malware
3. Reformat

1. First run Disk Check (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools). This could take a while. Remove all the files that can be safely deleted or compacted. Next Right-click Internet Explorer and and delete cookies, temporary files, and internet history. Now Run Disk Check on your main hard drive (C:\). Right click C:\ under My Computer and click Tools>Scan Disk. Check both boxes, and start. Click Yes. Run Disk Defragmenter. Under Scan Disk on the tools menu. This could take a while. When it finishes, restart your computer. A blue screen will come up. Let it finish. If this doesn't fix your computer move to next step.

2. Download a good anti-virus program like avast (http://www.avast.com) and run it in boot-time mode. Also download anti-spyware (http://www.safer-networking.org) and run it. Delete any results found.

3. Reformat. This should only be a last resort. It will erase everything. Restart comp and when screen goes black press F10 until comp beeps. Follow the prompts until you see a button for advanced options. Press it. Follow the prompts. Do a destructive recovery. This should solve your problem. God Bless.

You apparently have your hard drive loaded with a lot of stuff, and that will slow it down to a crawl. You also probably have programs, games, and other stuff you have downloaded and never removed. You need to do some severe disk cleanup, and you probably need to add more RAM, but for now, get the disk cleaned up. Click on Start, Settings, Contro Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and find any old programs that you no longer use. Click to remove them. Do the same for old games. Look for stuff you downloaded and don't use. Remove it. After you are satisfied you have uninstalled as much as you safely can, close the control panel and restart the computer.

Delete all the music and photos you can. Photos are graphic intensive, meaning they take up a lot of space. Music is the same. If you have a CD burner, burn them to a CD, otherwise, delete them.

After deleting and uninstalling everything you think you can safely get rid of, do a disk cleanup by clicking on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and Disk Cleanup. It will take a few minutes to run, then remove everything it finds.

Finally, download and install a program called Auslogics Disk Defrag. It is 100% better than Windows defrag program, and twice as fast. Once it is installed, run it. It will pull all the scattered pieces back together and make it easier for the RAM to find things.

If you do all that, I think you'll find your computer running a lot better. After this, keep it cleaned up by doing a disk cleanup often, and defragging after you have added and removed programs. Good luck!

defrag or clean up disk, it probably won't do anything for you.though. It seems like you have to many anti spy ware programs/ anti=virus programs or firewalls running at the same time They interfere with each other and slows down your computer. Shut some of them down Then see how that works
Make sure you restart after each.

Its probably so horribly fragmented, full of spyware, adware, trojans and corrupted that it isn't worth spening the time trying to clean it.

Re-install the OS - it'll take less time to install than it does to boot right now!

You ought to look at replacing your anti-virus software too. Sounds like it isn't doing its job! Remember that Microsoft Windows isn't secure enough on its own to be attached to the internet.

Defragment your drive, this could take 24 hours.
Scan it for viruses too, and delete any huge files.

Defragging should really help. Either use Windows Defrag or Download a free one.

If you download alot like you say you may have adware loading down your computer by running more processes. Get ad aware and do a full system scan.

download ccleaner......ad aware and run them both.....delete anything they recommend

also check your start up list by clicking start.....click on run.....type msconfig and then the start up tab........there are several things on there that don't need to be running.....extend the file locations out so you can read the entire name of the file before canceling anything......turn off any that are related to a program you don't run that often....but be careful......turning off the wrong thing can cause your system to not boot at all

then defrag your hd

good luck
