We are a very small staff team working in care. One of our colllegues continuously takes sick leave and then returns when her wages are stopped after 16 weeks (company policy). She constantly moans about our manager, the company and anybody else she can think of. Everybody is wrong, she takes all direction as a personal insult and is dragging everybody down. She refuses to help staff when needed at other homes as she does not want to travel which means other staff are stretched to their limits and yet we have all done it for her. Staff are becoming demoralised and even our manager who is very laid back usually is getting stressed because our colleague cries when asked to do something she does not want to do and then accuses the manager or us of putting pressure on her! She gets paid £9 an hour for doing virtually nothing. We have tried sympathising, befriending and encouraging her but if our tone of voice belies our exacperation she tells others that she is going to complain.

forget about tryin to help out this headcase anymore, unless it's a referral to a pyschologist....and if I were you I'd bring a box of kleenex to that confrontation by the sounds of it......

she sounds like a spoiled brat who is used to getting her own way, either tell her "sukk it up princess" or boot her outta your office cuz everyone else there is just making a living and has enough stressors in life without the addition of a full grown colleagues.....and I mean, it's not like you haven't tried helping her...it's just not working out so you HAVE TO try alternative methods now...good luck!

MORAH is quite right-your 'manager' is not 'managing' this situation at all, but is instead becoming as stressed as the rest of the staff--in fact i don't know who is worse...your so-called 'collegue' for getting away with all and sundry..., or your manager for letting her get away with it!! Make a 'discreet' 'phone call higher up the chain of command within the company, and get this slacker sorted out if she is not pulling her weight...and perhaps your 'manager' should be given assertive lesson's too!

How much is the manager getting paid ... obviously he/she is not earning their salary ... they need to "manage" the situation. It sounds like if this is a recurrent pattern of behavior and the dynamics in the office are destructive he/she should give her 90 days to shape up and if she doesn't to sack her.

Since something is preventing her from being fired, You need to ALL sit down and have an intervention. If the whole group is there saying "this is how we do things..." it may shut her up.
Good luck.
