I have a drill and large set of bits but don't know which bits are for what.

Don't do it. If you're lucky, all you'll do is ruin your bit. More than likely, you'll end up with a hole that isn't anywhere near what you want it to be. The bit will basically chip out the brick, and it won't cut a clean hole. Go to your hardware store and buy a masonry bit.

Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

A wood bit usually has an end on it like a screw.A metal bit can be used on wood also .
