You can have 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Platys can get to two inches, guppies about 1 inch. Try to stick to only female platys (the pet store will sex them) they are just as pretty as the males, but wont fight.

All male guppies is fine.

You will need a filter, heater, thermometer, hooded light/lid etc.

Keep your fish at about 25°C

You need a good book before you do anything. You can not just put water and fish into an aquarium. You first have to cycle the water. Get a book and read up on it.

Just a tip though, the larger the aquarium, the easier it is to maintain. Sounds silly but so true. I had a 10 gal. and constantly had to monitor the water, moved to a 50 gal and the water has been fine for over a year now.

Besides, once you get started you'll probably be hooked.

First you have to add water conditioner to remove harful chemicals in the tank such as cholrine. make sure you add some real or fake plants(real is better but since you are a begginer fake should work). Make sure you have proprer filtration. Also get a 25-50 watt heater and set the temperature to 73-76 degrees. i suggest getting 3 guppies and 2 platys. remember before you add them to the tank let them float in their bags in your tank for a few minutes to let them acclimate to the waters temperature. Be sure not ton get to much of their water in to your aquarium. i hope this will help. Good luck

Get a good book and find out what the nitrogen cycle is, before you can take care of fish you need to know how to take care of bacteria. Also if someone has something to sell the advice will reflect that! Good luck,PeeTee.

Measure your tank to figure out how many gallons it is then people will be better equipped to answer you. Try the site below it has a calculator to turn dimensions into gallons.
