There is a saying: "bad news early is good news." Which means, that the sooner you tell them, the better. My husband and I announced our first pregnancy at Thanksgiving Dinner with extended family there, and it wasn't a good idea. I should have told my parents in private before announcing it to the rest of the gang. Let them know with a phone call that you need to talk to them about something, and arrange a place and time to meet, if you live away from home. Then they will be mentally prepared for some news, and will probably have thought up 20 different, and worse, scenarios, so they will actually be relieved when all it is is a change in career paths.

I think it's awesome, what you want to tell them, if nursing is what you love, then you will be so much happier studying that!

After dinner, listen this is not that lifechanging and this about what you want for your life. Parent's often expect for children to change there action plan once they enter college. You do not need to be worried about the sports issue because that is secondary to your career. I wish you the best and I doubt very much that anyone would be let down as long as your descion is based on thought and active in persusing the new career... Wish you all the best

Just tell them. Stuff like that is important and yeah like you said life changing. Tell them and if they don't support you then they should and you should still got for it. And your studies are more important than softball. During dinner would be a good idea.

in addition to what everyone else said:

if they truly love you [which they undoubtedly do], they will support your decision. they might feel a little hesitant at first, but they'll eventually get over it. hey, it's not like you're planning to drop out of school or anything! you're trying to become a nurse!

wishing you the best of luck!

I am totally not trying to be a smarty pants, but you really shouldn't tell them during dinner. They could get upset and choke on their food. This happened to someone I know. Please find a better time to tell them.
