Simply put, NO! You just don't walk into a bosses office and say "Hey, I really don't want to work here anymore, but I do want to get unemployment, so would you please lay me off?"

If you don't like your job, you can talk to your boss about seeing if there is some way of making the job more interesting, such as adding additional responsibilities, or you can voluntarily leave.

You are wrong about the "being fired" thing. If you are fired you can collect unemployment. But it can't be because of something like just not showing up etc., then they will dispute it and win.
Why do you not look for another job instead of thinking up ways not to work?

it may be worth a try depending on your employer but i doubt if it will work. Some states have a provision to quit under certain circumstances (abuse, ect)and still collect with minimal/no penalty, Proving that the definition and expectations of your job changed substantially without compensation is another. (I was asked to lie to a customer about a job) and that made my employment "unworkable".

You can ask whatever you want, just like you can sue people for any reason. But, the employer pays for that unemployment, so there usually needs to be good reason

best bet is to find a new job first, then put in your two week notice. Asking to get laid off, is going to backfire, and you mine as well kiss that reference good bye.

You can ask. Some will and some won't.
