1. shred newspaper into strips, crumple it and make a medium pile, this must be enough paper to keep burning to get all of the small wood started. It needs at least enough starter material to last 15 minutes to get the logs started..

2.On it put tiny sticks, pyramid style. Then add slightly larger twig gs on the top of those pyramid style.

3. Then slightly larger sticks next, gradually reaching the small logs on the grate.

4.Once it is built then make sure your damper is 1/4 to 1/2 way open.

5. Now is time to take a match to the newspaper. Good Luck.

You will need to start the fire with paper and kindling (small pieces of dry wood). After you get the kindling burning, then put the logs on top of the lit kindling. You can also buy fire starters in a store that sells fire place accessories. They work well and are not as much work as the kindling method.

1st of all you need kindling wood to start the fire. Kindling wood is dry wood that is chopped into small pieces start with pieces about the size of a pencil and a few a bit bigger. You can use wadded up paper as a starter or those re-cylced paper egg cartons or the trays you get at the coffee shops really work good.
Anyway put your starter paper in and pile loosely the kindling wood and light the paper. Now you have to add pieces a bit bigger as the wood starts to burn and in a few minuets when the fire is hot enough you will be able to put on some logs.

If you don't have a gas lighter in your fireplace, then you will have to wad up a couple of days newspapers and put them into the grate, then take some small bits of wood for kindling (be sure to get enough) and then lay the smaller pieces of firewood on, then the larger one.

Make sure the flue is open or your house will smoke up. If the flu is open and there is still smoke coming into the house, open a window about an inch.

i agree with samm..but what i also do, especially if you dont have kindlen, is roll the newspapers up tightly, to form small logs, just a few pages at a time, and put that in the center of your pyramid of logs. remember, the fire needs air in order to burn, so leave spaces..there are also fire starter bricks of shredded wood chips that you can get at most hardware stores, even grocery stores and drug stores carry them. you light them, they burn, get your other logs hot and then they will burn..also, make sure your wood is dry and warm, not freezing cold..
good luck

First of all, don't burn pine. Burn only hard wood such as oak. Start with some twigs, a little news paper under the twigs, add a few pieces of wax, light the paper and you got fire. Now add your larger pieces of wood.
