I just started a new internship and I have to set up the voicemail on my phone. What should I say to sound professional?

"You have reached voicemail for ________ at _______. I'm sorry to have missed you, but if you'll leave a detailed message, I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for calling _______."

For the out of office message, specifying the date is wonderful, when you can. If you're going to be gone for a while, it's good to change the greeting so that it will reflect when you'll be back. For example:

"Please stop and listen to this entire message. You have reached voicemail for ______ at _______. I will be out of the office from MM/DD to MM/DD, returning on Monday, the DD. If you need immediate assistance, please contact _________ at XXX-XXX-XXXX. Otherwise, please feel free to leave a message, and I will get back to you upon my return. And thanks for calling _______."

It depends if you are supposed to change it every day (some people clearly state the date and if they are in the office for the day). You probably don't have to do that so try:

"This is X. I am away from my desk or on another call at present. Please leave me a message with your name and number and I will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you."

Definitely leave out the ums. My hubby's voice mail has a million ums and pauses. Not professional. Make sure to note who you are, where you work, and to let them know to leave a brief message w/ name and telephone number. If you are gonna be out of the office, change the message to reflect that, but remember to change it back upon your return, another mistake my hubby makes. :p

Hello, this is ____, I'm in the office today but either away from my desk or on another call. Please leave a message and I will return your call just as soon as I am able"

And when you are OUT of the office, "Hello, this is ____. Today is ______, 2007 and I am out of the office all day. Your call is important to me, so at the tone please leave a message and I will return your call just as soon as I am able"
