I am with Vango on this one. Good answer.

Of perhaps you refer more specifically to Southern Africa?

What are you referring to? Ancestral Europeans who settled in the South of what is now USA (Irish and English), in South America (mostly Spanish and Poruguese), in Southern Africa (Dutch/ French/German/ English/ Portuguese) or Aus and NZ (English and Irish)? The decendants of those original colonists are now (white)Americans, Brazilians, Argentinians, (white)Africans and (white) Aussies and Kiwis.
The only colonists in modern times is the American military, who go barging into countries uninvited and try to force their way of thinking on the locals.

Heavens know, most probably not in South Africa. I have never heard the term; where does it come from?
