Hey there Dude,

You can't. How can you trust the ones you pay for?

Seriously though, many of us have tested them and run them too. Generally, most people know which ones are good and which ones are not so good.

Here is a good list of resources for you that I use.

http://www.grisoft.com – AVG antivirus
http://www.avast.com – Avast antivirus
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.

And these are useful utilities:
http://www.microsoft.com/defender
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
http://www.mozilla.com - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

http://www.siteadvisor.com -McAfee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

I wouldn't trust them. They normally infect your computer with some sort of spyware, encouaging you to get thier product. If you don't have any protection at all, you can get free Windows Defender. There are other things too. Also, your internet provider may offer free virus protection programs. AT&T YAHOO! (SBC YAHOO!) offers Norton, and Comcast gives McAfee. Two good virus protection programs.

I don't know how to tell you who to trust. I don't trust them, but I've had the same antivirus for 3 years and it's protected my computer all that time without a problem. My experience is that if they offer a free scan, they are then going to tell you that the computer has "x" number of viruses and it will cost you "x" dollars to buy their software to get rid of it.

Get Avast, it's free, it's good, it's reliable, it's been around since 1981. It updates daily.

And to add to the previous answer, it is SpyBot Search & Destroy, and that's spyware, not antivirus. He/she asked for antivirus.

Make sure it's a reputable company that a lot of people use. Make sure they have a support and contact section so you can call them for help, if necessary.

Trendmicro has a nice online virus/spyware scanner:

Vista sucks up way too many components. besides as Norton and Defender. in case you have small RAM, attempt upgrading it. additionally, Avast! Anti-Virus utility would not take that lots source.
