Spam = unwanted email.

So when you start dumping a lot of unwanted email (usually ads) then you are a Spammer, and there are Spam Filters that try to remove that kind of email from your inbox. In Hotmail you can send your Spam to the junk folder, and any other emails from that email address will be routed there. Yahoo uses a bulk folder. Various companies offer various protection, at first you could only block one address, but when people starting using multiple email address to Spam people from the filters allowed you to block the entire domain. In the fight against spam there are stand-alone filters that look for key words in an email message (like a search engine does) and blocks the email based on the result.

Recently, Spam has become more than just unwanted email; it has become a method of identity theft. Read this article for more information on a case of this: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/17/technology/17spam.html?ex=1326690000&en=c8a2e5ee0c4b3ec2&ei=5089&partner=rssyahoo&emc=rss

The best thing to do is to not open any messages from someone that you don't know. Most of them will be spam. They can be just an ad, or they can put a virus on your machine (if you click on the attachment or a weblink), or it can be an attempt to steal from you. If your bank sends you a message that you need to update your personal information with an included weblink then it usually leads you to a fake site where this information can be used to withdraw your money from the bank. The way a responsible bank will do it is to tell you to go to their site and update your information. You are then expected to navigate to your banks site on your own so that you are sure you are actually on that bank's website. Then your log in and personal information will still be safe.
