OSPF is Open Shortest Path First and is not Cisco specific, but is a standards-based interior routing protocol. This is what allows all of the routers in an internetwork to know how to route packets from any source network to any destination network, and it automatically directs packets over the best possible path, as well as redirects packets around failed links. OSPF can be a large and complex topic, so I suggest starting with a couple of the links below.
