It really depends on what kind of company you work for. A little one-on-one is appropriate at smaller companies to ask for more.

However, at large companies (my husband and I both work at large companies), the raise amounts are set and there really is nothing that can be done about it.

As an example, if you manage a department of 4 people, and they all make roughly the same amount of money, and the company says "the pool this year is 2%" that means that you get the equivalent of 2% of everyone's salary. So you could give them all 2%, or give 2 2%, 1 1% and 1 3%. Or if there is a high earner who deserves the biggest raise, someone might get stuck with zero.

Life ain't fair...I know it. But all you can do is live with it, speak your mind, or leave your job. If you think you are getting the short end of the stick, all you can do is quit.

Asking for a higher raise takes some effort. First, you need to find out when compensation adjustments are decided. Usually large companies have to go through a long process in submitting your raise through HR and getting multiple people to approve. If you let you boss know after all raises have been approved they might be less likely to change it since they will have to go through this long process again. Second, you need to go to you boss and provide them with information on why you deserve it. You could be taking on more responsibility, you are below the average in pay in your industry, and so forth. I hope this helps abit.

a few years ago I worked for a company and the president was 'anxious' to give me my review and raise as I was going to be very happy...

well, the review was excellent, but the raise was not appropriate for the work I took on... shortly after, I just broke up laughing... a higher up happened to be around and wanted to know the joke as he wanted a laugh... I explained why I was laughing... 2 hours later I was called in to the presidents office and the raise was 6 times the original amount.

maybe not the way for you to do it, but thats my story I'm sharing
