My first two years of high school, I did horribly. My lowest point was in my freshman year, where I got a 68 average :( My now in my junior year im getting high 80's and my overall is 90. Do I have a chance of getting into a state university (NY), even with my bad grades from before?

It depends. Aside from keeping your grades high and doing well on SATs I would focus on extracurricular activities. Get involved in clubs, student government and volunteer in the community. Most people understand that students go through difficult times. It reflects well on you that you have worked so hard to improve your grades. Colleges also like students that are active. But remember that quality is better than quantity. It is better to join 1 or 2 organizations and be really active than join 10 and not be active. These experiences will help you grow as a person and will allow people to know you well enough to write recommendation letters. If you still have a problem getting into a 4 year college think about attending a 2 year college then transferring. Most community colleges have admission agreement with local 4 year colleges. This is a way to prove yourself in college and obtain general education credits at lower cost. Good luck to you.

One of my best friends had a story like yours. He did terrible in high school, with the exception of art and English. His senior year he tried a bit harder. He got to college with scholarships and grants, and never had to pay a dime of it himself. Pretty cool really. The first college he attended was a small community college where he got his Associates in Art Education, he then transferred to a private college and got a ton of more scholarships and junk and did very well. Where he was a d student in high school, he did very well in college. Usually a B average.
From what I understand, College is different than high school as you take classes you want, and it's a different atmosphere. I don't know from personal experience, I dropped out of school in the 5th grade to play blues guitar.

Everyone has a chance. Also, if you need scholarship help, I just heard of this really great program. If you are trying to get money for college, there’s a new “ethics essay” contest that Junior Achievement is doing for a $5K scholarship. Here’s more info if you are interested http://studentcenter.ja.org/aspx/LearnEthics/ethics_essay_rules.aspx.

Most CUNY schools are open admission meaning they'll accept any NYC residents. As far as SUNY most are easy to get into, except of course the four major SUNY schools: Binghamton, Stony Brook, Buffalo and Albany. Those schools are tough to get accepted. But you could try SUNY at Old Westbury or New Paltz both are easy enough to get accepted.

You will probsbly have an easier time if you go to a smaller 2 year college, do well, and then transfer to a four year college.
