I live in an apartment building. I recently discovered that the mail carrier gives all of the building's mail to my landlord, and HE is the one who puts our mail into the individual lock boxes. I feel uncomfortable with this. I was under the impression that mail carriers were the only people able to put mail into mailboxes. It seems shady that the landlord sees all of the tenants' mail.

It will depend on the arrangement.

If you look at Mailboxes, etc. you will see that the post office recognizes the location as 1 address and the boxes are really private boxes. The post office does not deliver to each individual box.

If the apartment building does not have legal boxes for each apartment then the post office will not recognize the units as individual units that they deliver mail to. They will deliver all the mail to the main address and expect that it is split up from there by the management.

This would be a bit odd for an apartment building. At the same time it would be completely legal.

Check with the post office. Start by assuming that nothing wrong is taking place and let them explain the situation. If the mail should be being delivered by the post office to the individual units then ask them why it is not and when the situation can be corrected.

Why would you wait 2 weeks to change your address? You should have done that way before then. Any mail that was delivered to your old place more than likely has been returned.

It is against the law for someone to get your mail inless authorized by you and you only. You need to call your post office and ask for the Postmaster and tell him or her what you have just told us and if you know your mail carriers name tell her,he is violation the post office rules. If you do not know you mail carriers name tell the postmaster your address,I have worked at the Post office in Ohio for 6 yrs.

hmmm..

Before you call the postmaster and get the carrier in trouble for what he thought might simply be a favor for all, I would talk to him and tell him what you have typed here.

THEN if he continues, call the postmaster, but give the carrier a chance first.

either way you will solve your problem so I would pick the way that causes the least distress to all.

That is absolutely against the FEDERAL law.
Contact the post master at your local office and complain loudly.

That carrier is in HOT water.

Yell!!

Why does it seem shady? There is no problem unless you know for a fact that he is opening your mail.....
