There have already been a lot of essential names listed. I'll add a few from off the beaten path:

Eric Overmyer -- his "On the Verge, or the Geography of Yearning," is probably my favorite play of the last 30 years.

Steven Dietz -- consistently brilliant. My favorite is "Private Eyes," which is just astonishingly good.
