Well, your question demands a two-part answer:

For starters, yes, the Cubs will win more games this year. Bear in mind, however, that if they win 67 games in 2007, they'll have won "more games." That said, most pundits are picking the Cubs to finish at .500 at least.

As far as the playoffs go, it's definitely possible. Neither the Cards nor the Astros have made significant upgrades. Pujols showed signs of weakness last year and Edmonds is old. And besides Chris Carpenter, none of their starting staff is particularly imposing. Same goes for the Astros -- they have added Carlos Lee (but he's getting considerably long in the tooth) but they've also lost Andy Petite and probably Roger Clemens. Milwaukee could be a little bit better. The Pirates will hold down the cellar -- they will not kick the Cubs into it again!

A few clarifications: Soriano is not our (oops, I've outed myself as a Cubs fan, haven't I?) second baseman. That would be Mark DeRosa (note correct spelling). Soriano will be playing the outfield -- most likely right field, even though he's better suited for center (long story there).

The "A guy" whose name escapes you is Aramis Ramirez -- the premiere third baseman in the National League. A consistent or better offensive performance from him, Derek Lee, Soriano and our hot-hitting catcher Michael Barrett and you can all expect the Cubs to kick butt in '07.

I already answered this earlier, but let me enlighten you:

I have a lot of theories about baseball in general and I have one that applies to the Cubs this year. I think they spent way too much money on ok players (including Soriano). Ted Lilly gets 10 million a year, are you kidding me? His career record is under .500.

Also, I can name a bunch of players in recent years who never fulfill giant contracts and it ends up hurting the team more that it does helping. Look at the season Carl Pavano had in 2003. He had an amazing year, but it was just that year. How has he done since? Or Sexson and Beltre when he signed with the Mariners? I just think when teams overspend, it ends up biting them in the butt.

I don't think it's the fact of having the Cubs players produce that's the question. They may all have averages in the .290s and hit 30 home runs. It's when they hit and if they can play as a cohesive unit and score with men on base and hit the 2-run, 3-run homers. If they can do that, they should be just fine and maybe make the playoffs.

But, remember thay are the Cubs.

Hold on..

Soriano is an offensive player but a butcher at 2B. He will score more than he lets in so that will help.

Ted Lilly is a .500 pitcher. Cubs overpaid for this guy, and he will not get along with Lou Pinella's yelling style!

Jason Marquis is another average pitcher.

The rest of the guys are so so. Derosa from the Red Sox is a non-issue. he probably won't start.

Derek Lee is a good player, but watch out for the strikeouts.

If this team can't hit HRs they won't score. And the Yankees proved that a few years ago that you can't win that way.

I was about to say they do look good on PAPER but then I had an awakening... His name is Ted Lilly, Best of luck with this guy as he has been known to BLOW UP in some pressure situations... I do admit though that the Soriano pick up may have been the hottest offseason signing. He is a class act and solid in and out of the clubhouse. If Alfonso steps it up and the others buy in they have got a LEGIT shot!!!!

The Cubs had a strong lineup already, adding Soriano will only make them better. Their pitching will be the question...Zambrano is no question an ace. If Marquis pitches well, and if Woods and Prior pitch at all, they will be strong...Big "ifs" but will be the difference between winning and being average.
The biggest thing the Cubs have going is Piniella. He will make them a winner, no doubt. It will be fun to watch them this year, and Chicago is in for a real treat I am sure...and they have all the tools in place to win big.

You forgot their biggest pickup: Lou Piniella. He is the reason why the Cubs will win more games.

The Cardinals got wrose this offseason, so perhaps the Cubs have a shot at the playoffs. But they need more pitching. Marquis is horrible, Lilly is good but not great, and you can't count on anything from Mark Prior.

I think that the Cubs will enter next year's World Series. They have the crazy beast Carl Zambrano, excellent pitcher Mark Prior, and new additions manager Lou Piniella and Alfonso Soriano, an excellent second-baseman. Next year is the year of the Chicago Cubs.

all and sundry had a bad year. With the thumb harm to Ramirez that lasted for the 1st 0.5 of the season,Derek Lee's hunch and eventual commerce. A bullpen whilst called upon got here into video games donning gas cans and undesirable beginning pitching it exchange right into a season to forget. One little bit of irony they lost the season opener to the Braves sixteen-5 and Lou's final game the Cubbies lost to the Braves sixteen-5.

They have great pitching, 3 guys with a chance of getting 40+ homers, now the only thing they have to worry about is injuries!!

If no major injuries occur they will make the playoff and have a great chance to be in the world series.
