I got into a big disagreement with my father many, many years ago regarding this question:

Geographically, Long Island in New York is comprised of Brooklyn (Kings), Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Politically, Long Island is comprised of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The reason for the difference is that Brooklyn and Queens are considered boroughs of New York City, even though they are not connected, except by bridges and tunnels.

Four counties on Long Island: Kings County, Queens County, Nassau County, and Suffolk County. Parts of Kings and Queens include NYC boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.
