I have a beautiful Bonsai tree that is 25 years old. I was told to put it in a bright place and water once a week. I did but obviously watering it once a week wasn't enough becuase it now looks dead. All the leaves have dried out and are falling off. I have tried giving it Bonsai treatment that you add to water and i am watering it everyday!! Any other ideas??? Help!

To find out whether it is dead or not, scratch a small piece of bark on the trunk with a thumbnail. If the underlying tissue is green or whitish, it's alive. If it's brown, it's dead.
If it's alive, make sure there's no excess water in the pot, and put the whole thing, pot and all, into a polytene bag and tie up the top, leaving lots of air in the bag. Put it in a light place but out of sunlight and LEAVE IT ALONE for at least 2 weeks and perhaps a month or more. It may well recover and you'll see small green shoots emerging. When that happens, you can take the bag off and start watering it whenever the soil under the surface seems dryish. Don't follow the "water once a day" rule - water when it's needed, this might be once a week in winter, or three times a day when it's growing strongly.
It might be that the type of tree you have is deciduous and naturally shedding its leaves. Some don't go into proper dormancy if they are put indoors.
I've revived quite a few trees in this way, the main thing is to be patient, and of course don't bother if the "scratch test" proves that the tree is dead, but good luck!
I could have probably helped more if you'd been able to name the tree, as tropical trees are much more difficult than temperate.

Try to keep it out of direct sunlight. put it in a sunlit room but not in a place where the tree might get too hot. The sun may be causing it to dry out. You can see if this is the case by noting if the soil is wet each time you water it daily. If it's dry the place is still too hot for the tree. Keep watering it when necessary and keep on adding that Bonsai treatment. It should be fine again. If it's not then the tree may have a disease and the best option maybe to take it to a nursery to see if a "tree doctor" can help.

You cant revive a plant! Water it and see if it is actually dead.

Because of limited space in the confines of a bonsai pot, bonsai care can be quite difficult. The shallow containers limit the expanse of the root system and make proper watering practically an art in itself. While some species can handle periods of relative dryness, others require near-constant moisture. Watering too frequently, or allowing the soil to remain soggy can promote fungal infections and "root rot". Sun, heat and wind exposure can quickly dry a bonsai tree to the point of drought, so the soil moisture should be monitored daily and water given copiously when needed. The soil should not be allowed to become "bone dry" even for brief periods. The foliage of some plants cultivated for bonsai, including the common Juniper do not display signs of drying and damage until long after the damage is done, and may even appear green and healthy despite having an entirely dead root system.

Bonsai is the style, but what type of plant is it? It should be basically treated as if it were a normal plant. Most plants if they are over watered will drop leaves and die. But if it is 25 years old it might be something else completely.

I am assuming that it has excellent drainage.

I ignore mine totally. It gets rained on occasionally. I am constantly amazed it is still OK. It is about 10 years old.

Good Luck.

First, we need to know the species of the bonsai, then I can give you the care information. Often we try to keep an outdoor tree in the house, and that will kill it in a few months. You might want to look at the Care page on my website: www.american-bonsai.com Meanwhile, you're welcome to send me a photo: wchoat@american-bonsai.com and I'll try to determine the species, then we can go from there. Also, until then, water it thoroughly, and keep the soil moist (not soaking wet). That is a good "general" watering rule.

Oh how sad. I would be very upset. Your best bet is to take them to a garden center. They would know more about them. All I can say is to maybe give them a little tiny mixture of sulfate of ammonia mixed with water. That always seems to get things growing . Or use a tiny bit of Quick Set which is a prevent-er of transplant shock. I would also trim the little ends of the branches off up to a new bud or until you see live wood inside. If the branches snap and are dry inside then it is dead. If it bends, there is still life inside. I would keep them away from too much heat until you start to see something growing again. Good Luck I hope they make it.

I would have to agree with the watering and placing of a plastic bag over the tree as your best chance of success. The scratching of the branch is a good test to see if the tree is truly still alive. Feeding your tree is also helpful in keeping it healthy, I would assume you have re-potted your tree at least once every two years depending on the type of tree it is.
