Where does the name ill originate from?

It is Latin & originated w/in the Roman Empire. Technically it is 'Vulgar Latin' meaning that it was the common people's latin. The classical latin was spoken by the educated, upper classes. Eventually, latin became a language which was only written - not spoken.
