Although lactobaciluis acidophilus has few adverse effects, two of these are gas and bloating that may last several days after initally started. The stomach pains you've been experiencing may be intestinal gas and may not involve your stomach at all. The stomach is located in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen and is partially covered by the ribs. If your pain is elsewhere, intestinal gas is the most likely cause of your pain. You can try OTC simethicone (Gas-X, etc.) to resolve gas. This adverse effect normally resolves by itself in time. Give it a few more days and if it hasn't gotten better in 3-4 more days, speak to your physician. Lactobacillus isn't recommended for those with certain digestive conditions so if you have prescribed these for yourself without your doctor's knowledge and approval, you may want to check with your doctor about the advisability of continuing use.

Taking Acidophilus

I take a Probiotic (which is pretty much the same thing). Quite often when a person takes antibiotics or oral steroids (in my case, asthma) it is common to develop yeast and oral thrush infections. Probiotics or acidophilus combats this condition. One important point I remember my doctor told me is that when a person takes antibiotics, they also kill the "good" bacteria in the digestive system that is necessary for good nutritional absorption in the system (vitamins, minerals, etc). Therefore, acidophilus aids in restoring healthy bacteria in you digestive system. I don't know the kind of acidophilus you are taking, but I get mine from the druggist (not all carry it tho) that they keep in the refrigerator behind the counter. That kind is a live organism and must be keep cool. This all sounds like goofy science, but it really works for me. Try the kind you can get from druggist.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: If you are treating a vaginal yeast infection, that could also be the cause of your abdominal discomfort. A great treatment for that is an over-the-counter medication called Monostat. You can get rid of it in a day or two! Despite my name, Murphyboy - I am female, and I'm very familiar with your problem.

In sensitive people, acidophilus can cause painful stomach/intestinal GAS. Read about it here: http://www.medicinenet.com/lactobacillus_acidophilus-oral/article.htm

There is a better option at your health food store. Renew Life makes a probiotic that is ENTERIC COATED so it doesn't dissolve until it gets to the lower bowel. Called "FloraSmart." Wonderful stuff! AND it doesn't need refrigeration. Read about it here: http://www.renewlife.com/flowmeter.cfm?meter=376 They have other, stronger products, as well as a formula specific for Candida overgrowth.

Don't take them everyday if you're going to take them. Just like once or twice a week. They used to do the same thing to me. I eat yogurt sometimes now but not everyday and I feel better.
