It does depend on the phone and where you are coming from. If it's a tri-band phone (different than tri-mode which is 1 analogue and 2 digital modes) you'll be ok. A tri-band phone will work in Europe, Asia and North America. The North American systems unfortuanately are not as good as the others - to those American's out there, this isn't a slight it's a fact. I live in Canada and our system is crap compared with the European and especially the Asian systems (well Japan and Hong Kong anyhow).
Anyone who sells your phone or your service provider should be able to tell you if it will work in the US. If your phone will work then once you're there you can sign up for a service that best suits your needs.

If you are only visiting for a short time, check with your current cell service provider on rates here in the USA. The k750 is a GSM phone, so it will work on the systems here in the States. However, only the K750i will work. Other models are only for China.
If you are here for a long time, just find a cell provider here that will support the phone with a new SIM card.

You could rent a cell phone when you get here or go to Walmart and get a Track Phone there pretty cheap and pay as you go with a phone card.

depends who your carrier is... Hopefully, you have Tmobile, it's a lot easier that way. Usually I just pick up a temporary phone at Target(market like tesco or cora) for 50 dollars and comes with 500 minute free card.

You need to check with you cell phone service provider. It has nothing to do with the phone - it's the service.

Check with the store where you bought it. Most do work anywhere except for dead zones. My wife's boss uses his in Israel and all over Europe and Asia and he got it here in Ohio.
