I have de-fraged & the drive has about 60% free space

If it is truly that Bad. Save ALL your Data to Backup and then Reinstall EVERYTHING

My first suggestion is always to scan for spyware. Spybot is the best choice as well as Microsoft Defender.

You can automate Spybot....there's a tutorial at;

After the spyware is removed, make sure your system has all the Windows and Office updates and make sure that your anti-virus program is set to NOT scan network drives.

Make sure you do not have any big files on your desktop, this will increase your profile size and slow down the whole computer.

HAve you checked your task manager? THere could be a dodgy process which is taking up your RAM.

How much RAM you got. too little RAM can slow down the speed of your programs
