Look for a sign at gas stations that indicates they have: K-1.

K-1 is the type of kerosene you want for heaters. You can buy it at most big box home improvement stores but you will pay more at those retail outlets than you will at gas stations. Be aware that some stations may be particular about what container you dispense into. Some may put up a fit about pumping into a red can. The "approved" color can for kerosene is blue but I have done fine with a clear plastic container.

A gas station. Make CERTAIN you use kerosene. Gas in a kerosene heater will explode. You will be burned.
