I have a 10G fresh water tank that I will stock with around 4-7 small schooling fish such as guppies or tetras.

I would like one larger (not too large, mind you, but beefier than guppies, tetras, danios, etc) fish that doesn't require "brothers and sisters" of the same species.

Any suggestions? I'm aware of the 1" / gallon rule, and I don't plan to violate it. I'd like a fish that is large enough to stand out in a crowd of guppies or tetras.

Thanks!

With the small fish in the tank I would stick with the Molly or Platy families. All tropical fish need at least one buddy.

Try a dwarf gourami,it will appear larger, and being an Anabatid it will be fairly gentle on the bio-load of your tank, and certainly not too expensive or difficult to find. Some of the trade names are "Sunset Gourami or Rainbow Gourami". There are other names too, but the Latin name for all of them is the same. Good luck. By the way,I think it's excellent that you do research on fish before buying,it saves you money and fish don't get put in a situation in which they fail to thrive. ------PeeTee

2 colorful (red) platties would stand out. Gouramies are not a good idea-the other fish will nip their feelers. Bty, sunset gouramis are not the same fish as dwarf gouramis...
