The real answer is that coffee is actually the oil contain in the grind bean diluted into water and soap actually break apart the oil molecule. This molecule gives the taste. So, if you're a coffee lover about ±3% of your coffee will lost it's taste because of the soap residue in your coffee pot. This shouldn't really affect the taste. This recommendation is however true when cleaning an espresso machine.

If it's a metal one, all you really have to do is rinse it out with hot water, since coffee is the only thing you make in it. If you use soap, it's possible you won't get it completely rinsed out and that will really make the coffee taste nasty.
If you mean the glass pot for a coffeemaker, I wash mine with soap and water all the time.

I use just a tiny squirt of dish washing soap and then rinse my glass decanter out thoroughly. I have not noticed a change in the taste.

IT IS COMPLETELY OK TO USE DISH SOAP TO CLEAN YOUR COFFEE POT. JUST BE SURE TO USE PLENTY OR WATER TO RINSE THE POT GOOD. DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES TO MAKE SURE THE SOAP IS GONE.

It can leave residue which will affect the taste of your coffee.
Try cleaning it with hot water and some white vinegar.
