It is a custom of Northwest Coast Native Americans. They hold a great ceremony and the chiefs give gifts to everyone. Check the link for more information.

Now that you mention it I think there is a Potlatch tribe. Don't quote me...I do know that there are trees, in the Pine family, that are call Potlatch..Try Wikipedia. Hell of a lot smarter than me...
